Nathan Cooper Gristmill NJ by Regina Geoghan. The historic Nathan Cooper Gristmill is located in Chester New Jersey along the Black River behind and a major North/South road in front. It was built in 1826 and is one of a very few remaining restored water-powered mills in New Jersey. It is listed on the State and National Registers of Historic Places. The waters of the Black River are used to turn the steel water wheel to ground grains into flour. The Mill’s two sets of 2,000 pound millstones are capable of producing up to 800 pounds of flour per hour. Modern turbines were installed in the 1870s to replaced the mill’s two original wooden waterwheels. Today, the mill runs by an all-steel-Fitz Company waterwheel.
