Description
This wood stork is trying to maintain its balance in the top of a tree in an Osceola County rookery near Kissimmee, Florida.
The wood stork (mycteria americana), formerely called the wood ibis, is a tropical and subtropical species that breeds in much of South America, Central America, the Caribbean, and is the only stork that presently breeds in North America. There are small breeding populations in Florida, Georgia, South Carolina, and a recently discovered one in southeastern North Carolina.
Mycteria americana prefers cypress tree marshs and swamps but also forages in mangroves and nearby habitat, looking for areas where lowering water levels are concentrating fish. Also looks in open wetlands and paddy fields where it walks slowly and steadily in the shallow water holding its sensitive beak open in the water as it looks for fish, frogs, large insects and anything else that it can catch.
