Once a year a Murder of Crows visits my home. The night sky begins to fill with dark shapes and haunting cries or the Crows delight. Each day they are join by more and more until the sky is black with the birds in flight. They come into roost at sunset; they leave at sunrise - having no fear of man of beast. Then one day silence. They crows are gone. Another year will pass before the murder returns.
Murder of crows is the collective noun for a group of crows

Bob, you always have such amazing light in your work. Even with the dark tones, the birds are surrounded by the light of the sky. This event must be something to see as is your photograph. Excellent work!! Crows are very smart and are one of the birds that can learn to talk as are Ravens. Definite f/v :).

Crows are near and dear to me. I love the image here and I have walked among many a crow. They fly in and out of any reality they choose. Somewhat like artists. At any rate, this thrilled me to see this wonderful image and the beauty of light and shadow. V/F

The title may be a mystery for me. I am saying it for in this bird migration there are many chasers in my country that profit their travelling for murder the birds just for having sport you know. I find this bursto of crows just starling and awesome. What where the camera´s parameters for having such a still and sharpeness on the whole?. Beautiful. Rosa
Bob Orsillo replied:
Hi Rosa, I used a wide lens at a high ISO. This photograph shows only a small number of the many that arrive each year. "Murder of Crows" is a term used to describe a flock of crows. Thank you for your wonderful comment.

Bob, this is such a beautiful photo. Memories of Alfred Hitchcock. And again, thank you so much for your commentaries on Still Life 1 and on my gallery in general. I've been feeling a bit down lately and wondering if my artwork has any quality to it at all. Your words, knowing that they come from such a well received and talented artist as yourself, were quite uplifting for my poor weak soul. Thanks again. Saludos, Mexico

What a powerful and evocative image - no doubt scary and chilling to many, but to me simply amazing and beautiful! I've never seen quite this many crows together, but some years they migrate through our Wyoming valley in great numbers. In the evening on their way to roost in the cottonwoods upriver, they are silent, and they arrive in small bunches, as if not wanting to draw too much attention to themselves. But in the morning, they raise a deafening clamor and take off in huge swarms to forage in the fields and follow the river south. This fantastic photo brings the experience to life, accompanied by all the historical and mythological connontations. v/f

Love it! It reminds me of Hitchcock and Poe. :-) Wonderful capture and the lighting gives the work an ominous, creepy factor-- perfect for the horror genre. Well done. :-) V/F

Apologies and correction - that should have been an ostentation of peacocks (which makes much more sense!)

Oh and just an added anecdote - my youngest brother's nickname is Crow because he would pick up every shiny thing (like jewelry etc.) and hide it away. Apparently, according to Dad, crows hoard shiny things!

I have always liked the reference "a murder of crows" - I'm fascinated by words and groups of words. So many old wives tales about where this phrase came from - an old tale that a group of crows will kill a dying cow, or that they will decide the fate of another crow and condemn it to death. Probably, according to PBS, the term came about at a time when there were fancy literary names for other groups of animals - and maybe you can find equally stunning images for them! Like an ostentation of ostriches!! Totally love this though admit that a murder of crows can feel pretty ominous to me. F/V

Wonderful work & description, Bob! Reminds me of a scene from NC where I videod Starlings in the thousands....it is a truly amazing thing!!

What an amazing occurrence and image you have captured! Hauntingly beautiful. v/f. Crows are strange creatures and can be surprisingly affectionate in my experience. I once cared for a wounded crow for about a week. Because we were short of kennel space at the vet hospital I worked for, I had to hold him while cleaning out his kennel several times a day (birds are messy!) This crow was amazing in that he tolerated me tucking him under my arm while cleaning with my other hand. He actually seemed to enjoy the attention and I took to carrying him around with me during breaks and after hours. He would cock his head up at me and look me straight in the eyes. Sure felt like crow love...guffaw! After a week he was in pretty good shape so the vet released him back at his property (which is where he had found him wounded.) Amazingly he came back to visit several times!

Rory that is a great story, what an experience you had! They really are amazing birds.

For a time as a child I lived on a farm. The crow was different from all other birds there. I do not know how to describe them save that they were different somehow. You have captured that difference. WONDERFUL! V + F + W

Very cool. Bet it was loud as well! They usually visit my property in the fall like this. And the robins too - masses of them. Great shot. Vote.
