Description
The rather grumpy looking bird you see in this collage is called a mud hen, also known as an American coot. I thought this aquatic bird was a weird type of duck but it is actually in a distinct category all its own. The mud hen does not have the webbed feet like ducks but instead has broad, lobed scales on their lower legs and toes that fold back. They live in marshes and open bodies of water throughout North America and migrate south for the winter. This collage was created using only hand cut paper from magazines and other sources.
