Description
There is something about early morning in the wilderness.
Even die-hard non-morning people admit that it’s worth getting up to see the sun rise – because it’s not only a matter of seeing the sun’s golden rays lightly touch the landscape and kiss it with glow. It’s the sound – or silence of sound – and the coolness, and the feeling of anticipation.
Enter into the world of Morning Sun Salutation, the artwork.
High in the alpine forest, next to the lake, we emerge from the tent where we have been camping overnight. Oh . . . it’s cold, and instinctively we pull our coats tight around ourselves, seeking to draw in the warmth from our bodies. It’s very tempting, in the dawn darkness, to scuttle back into the tent and burrow into our sleeping bags, still warm from our just being in them.
But we don’t, because we know that the sunrise is near, and it will come and go without us if we don’t stay.
And so the sunrise does arrive – gracefully and quietly, humbly and yet with a sense of confidence that is almost majestic.
Because we are ringed by mountains – this is a high, alpine valley in the Wallowa Mountain Wilderness of Oregon, USA – the sun peeks first over their tops, and when it does so, the light touches the land and lake bit by bit, gently moving as the sun rises higher.
Soon, when the rays reach us, where we are sitting by the shore and absorbing the view, we feel its warmth – feeble at first, but growing as the day draws strength.
All is still and quiet around us, punctuated at just the right rate by the musical chirp of birds, adding their song to nature’s performance.
What a beautiful place this is! What a perfect time to be here! How worth it, it was, to leave the sleeping bags and tent behind to see the beginning to this beautiful day!

Beautiful landscape that calls me to the wilderness, away from all of the stress and strife that is everywhere right now.
