Monk Seal Pup Having Fun, No. 1 - PK1

I so enjoyed watching PK1, a 5 week old Monk Seal pup playing along the northern shoreline of Kauai, Hawaii. His mother prevents the pup from going beyond the reef where it might fall prey to sharks and on this day was also keeping it the water. Mothers nurse for about six weeks during which they will not eat. Hawaiian monk seals are endangered and one of two remaining monk seals. The third species is now extinct. Monk Seals are protected by law. Conservationists on the island establish a perimeter border around the nursing mother and volunteers often monitor the area. A large Green Sea Turtle was also sunning itself in the protected area.
