Hiding deep in a forest of green leaves, a monarch butterfly (Danaus plexippus) stands on the top of a blooming red orange cone-flower with pink petals. Cone-flowers are among the most numerous of the wildflowers behind my home in Wisconsin. So bright and colorful, these beautiful flowers are easy to spot, even when hidden in a jungle of green plants. I'm supposing that their colors, red, orange, and pink, which stand out so well against green, make them as easy for butterflies to spot as they do for me. And the size of the top of these flowers are just right for a monarch to stand on. The wildflower flower and insect are made for each other. Unfortunately, recent reports are that the monarch population in the Eastern U.S. has mysteriously declined by over 90% in recent years. This photo was taken in late July, mid summer.
