Description
This is Mokulua Nui Island, off the eastside of Oahu. It is also known as Moku Nui or Rabbit Island. In an abbreviated meaning, Moku means Island in Hawaiian. It has a smaller sister island, Moku Iki (small). Nui means large or big. The Mokulua islands are part of the summit caldera of the Ko‘olau shield volcano that slid into the ocean in one or a series of massive landslides more than a million years ago.
The island is also often referred to as Rabbit Island. At one time there was a rabbit farm on the Island. In 1994, the rabbits were removed because of the destruction they were causing to the native ecosystem of the island, which is an important seabird breeding area. The Island is currently protected to preserve the seabird breeding colonies. While diving and fishing from a boat is allowed, getting onto the Island farther than the high-water mark is only with a permit.
The islet is now a state protected bird sanctuary. During the spring and summer months thousands of sooty terns, wedge-tailed shearwaters, bulwers petrels, brown noddies and red-tailed tropic birds come to breed here.
The incredible blue and turquoise colors of the sea on this side of Oahu are mesmerizing.
The flowers in the foreground are native Pōhuehue (Ipomoea pes-caprae subspecies brasiliensis), the Hawaiian Beach Morning Glory
