Description
Travel to Window Rock, Arizona, one of the western states of the United States, and you will find a magnificent memorial to the brave men of the Navajo Nation who created an unbreakable code which the Japanese, who had declared war on the USA, December 7, 1941. The names of all of the Code Talkers are written on bricks whick lay at the base of this wonderful memorial. The United States government, after great discussion, chose to recruit 29 original men from the great Navajo Nation. to become Marines and went to San Diego to work on their code. It was not until Ronald Reagan declared National Code Talker Day, that the people of the United States become more aware of exactly how these amazing mem truly sacrificed their lives to save the USA from destruction by the Japanese Armed Forces.
This tribute was given by President Begaye of the Navajo Nation...“Our Navajo Code Talkers sacrificed their lives as they responded to the call of duty and enlisted into the armed forces during World War II,” said President Russell Begaye. “Their bravery in battle and ingenuity in the field of military communications helped lead the United States to victory in World War II. Their service protected the freedom and liberty of the Nation as we know it today."
On July 28, 1982, U.S. President Ronald Reagan issued a proclamation designating Aug. 14, 1982 as National Navajo Code Talkers Day. The proclamation stated that the day was “dedicated to all members of the Navajo Nation and to all Native Americans who gave their special talents and their lives so that others might live.”
“The Office of the President and Vice President holds our Navajo Code Talkers and their service in highest regard. With each passing year, we seem to lose another of our national treasures, the Code Talkers,” said Vice President Jonathan Nez. “We ask the Navajo Nation to stand with our Code Talkers, our Veterans and their families in affording them a day of remembrance."

Very poignant, Debby, and great memorial for these amazing men. Their story is still so inspiring. Love your presentation and the environment in which this sculpture is placed. So apropos. LF

Fina, thank you so very much for your kind words! We lived with Dine, the People, those who fought and served. Never would they say they were Code Talkers - for the Navajo are a proud people, and do what they need to do to serve their country..and to think these men did not even have their citizenship at the time!!! Doesn't make sense - but up until 8 years ago, my dear friend, the sister of one of the Code Talkers, was still trying to get her ID card and had to pull rabbits out of the hat to get it done! Incredible! Thank you again!
