Description

The dome of the Chapel of the Princes in the Medici Chapels in Florence Italy. The Medici Chapels are two structures in the Basilica of San Lorenzo, one called the Sagrestia Nuova (designed by Michelangelo) and this one, the Cappella dei Principi (Chapel of the Princes). It was designed by the architect Matteo Nigetti to the designs of Don Giovanni de’ Medici. The Cappella dei Principi has a lavish interior conceived to be a monument to the greatness of the Medici family. Indeed, the interior is covered with marble or precious stones. The dome was to be similarly lavish, covered entirely in lapis lazuli and gilded bronze. It was to be a true mark of triumph and self-celebration by the Medici. However, this plan for the dome was never realized as the Medici dynasty came to an end. It was ultimately frescoed in 1828 with scenes from the Old and New Testaments that we see today.
