MATRIARCH
A female alligator sits guard near her nest in the Florida Everglades. Female alligators are actually very attentive and fiercely protective mothers. This particular alligator has been a mother many times and has the most successful survival rate of any female alligator in the area. They will guard the nest until it hatches and then protect their young for a year and sometimes even longer. Baby alligators are very vulnerable to predators and even with their mother's protection, only a handful out of every nest survives to adulthood.
