Description
These are two of the fabled Oak Bluffs Gingerbread Houses on Cape Cod's Martha's Vineyard. In the mid-1800s, a Methodist camp meeting took place on a half-acre site at Oaks Bluff. Tents were erected for the meeting attendants. Over time, the meeting spot became a more permanent and small houses were built as year-round member housing. The cottages were built very close together out of necessity and a close-knit community arose. In 1880, the community became formally known as Cottage City. The name would later be changed to Oak Bluffs.
The community of quaint Gingerbread Houses to almost 500 over the island at one time. Today, only about 300 of them are left standing.
Martha's Vineyard is an island located south of Cape Cod in Massachusetts. It is the 58th largest island in the United States, with a land area of about 96 square miles. The island, along with nearby Nantucket, is only accessible by boat. Ferries run regularly out of several mainland Cape Cod ports bring supplies and tourists to the island.
This is a digital photo painting as I have applied a paint application to give it a more painterly look.
