Description
This boat is the last of a breed and I am not even sure she is still afloat. Called a "Buy boat" by the Chesapeake Bay watermen, she is designed by a deep hold below decks to hold oysters that the crew would buy from the fishing boats working the bay for oysters. At the turn of the last century, the skipjack sailing vessels would leave port on Monday morning and stay out on the bay all week. As they were under sail and the Buy Boats were motorized, the fishermen needed a way to get their catch to market all week long without damaging the product. That's where the buy boats came in. They would buy the harvest and return to port each day with the catch. This image was made ten years ago and this boat was the only one I knew of in the Middle Chesapeake.
