Description
Male California Quail
A male California quail perched on a tree. This year there were a few quail nests along the Leaburg Canal in Vida, Oregon. I have walked there many years and never noticed them in early summer. My dog actually flushed a couple out as they tend to be in the long grass and were startled when my dog got too close. There were some chicks, but I was too busy grabbing my dog back to get a picture of them before they were ushered into deeper foliage by their mother. The California Quail is similar to the Gambel's quail but differentiated mainly by region, although the Gambel quail does have a longer crest and a brighter head. The two species split about 1M to 2M years ago.

Nature, animals, beauty have been a source of nourishment throughout my life. Photography allows me to capture, interpret, and share that world of wonder I see about me, and sometimes use what I capture as an inspiration to create something new, by incorporating other exposures, textures or brushwork.
