Title
Male Anhinga With Eyecatching Eye Color
Artist
Carla Parris
Medium
Photograph - Digital Photograph
Description
Anhingas, also called snake birds or water turkeys, are water birds which swim underwater and use their sharp beaks to spear fish. After swimming, they find a perch where they can spread out their wings to dry.
Male anhingas are inky black, with silvery white feathers on their wings.
During breeding season, a male anhinga’s eyes are surrounded by a bright turquoise ring. This anhinga has the most colorful skin around his eyes which I have ever seen, with an unusual patch of lime green skin in addition to the typical bright turquoise ring.
This attractive jet black anhinga was photographed in April, 2018 at St. Marks National Wildlife Refuge in northwest Florida. He was perched in the sunshine on a clump of vegetation in the algae-covered marshes on the left side of the road from the mainland to the St. Marks Lighthouse on the Gulf coast.
