Description
The Magnolia Gas Station across from Little Rock Central High School served as the base camp for media covering the 1957 integration of Little Rock Central High School. The Spanish Colonial Revival brick building, at the corner of Daisy L. Gaston Bates Drive and Park Street, is an iconic reminder of the march of American history toward justice for all citizens with the court-ordered desegregation of Little Rock's school system in 1957. Magnolia Petroleum Compnany of Texas built the station in the 1920s. Today, the historic gas station is one of five Spanish Colonial Revival brick structures still standing in the Little Rock Central High School Neighborhood Historic District. The building was restored to its 1957 look by the National Park Service, serving at one point as the Visitors Center for Little Rock Central High School National Historic Site.
Magnolia Petroleum Company of Texas was one of many regional oil companies owned by Mobil Oil Corp, with Mobil an 1879 subsidiary of John D. Rockefeller's Standard Oil. Mobil Oil's roots reach back to 1866 in Rochester, NY, with the creation of Vacuum Oil Company by Matthew Ewing and Hiram Everest.
