Description
RKO was having some tough financial times in the early and middle 1950's so owner Howard Hughes reissued "King Kong" with the 1943 Val Lewton produced thriller "I Walked With a Zombie."
In Bonnie Henry's excellent 1992 book ,"Another Tucson," she cites Ewart Edwards who began working at the Lyric in 1951 as a teenage doorman. He became assistant manager and then manager.
"The balcony was cramped, hard wooden seats, no loge. plush seats downstairs. The lobby was small, small rest rooms. It was a cramped situation."
The staff of a dozen or so were "properly attired in gray and narrow." Hard to believe now but "in the evenings, the manager and the assistant manager were on the floor in tuxedos."
]"By the late 1950's, people who used to come downtown in the evenings weren't coming down anymore," said Edwards.
In the summer of 1966 the Lyric was leveled to make way for a new Pima County building.
I haven't been able to determine exactly when it was built. I didn't move to Tucson until late April the following year so I missed documenting the Lyric's demise.
