Luscious Loquat Fruits In Florida

Description
Warm and fuzzy! Luscious loquats grow on large evergreen shrubs or trees and have long been found in sunny Florida, where this one was photographed in March. The orange fruit is edible and its leaves are used for tea. This versatile and ornamental plant, originally from China, was probably imported to Southern Japan during the Tang dynasty and then to other mild, temperate climates. The fruit is healthy and often used in jams. While both are relatively small, orange-colored oval fruits, loquats, also known as Japanese medlar or Eriobotrya Japonica, are in the Rosaceae family with apples, pears, peaches and nectarines, but kumquats are a citrus fruit related to the larger, more popular, sweet orange.
