Description

There always seems to be a swirl of touristic and commercial activity around cathedral in many European cities but such was not the case in Lucca Italy. The Lucca Cathedral, Roman Catholic church dedicated to Saint Martin of Tours, feels a bit more secluded. Walk along a few alleyways, and suddenly there it is! Construction was begun in 1063 by Bishop Anselm (later Pope Alexander II). However, the west front seen here was begun later in 1204 and consists of a vast portico of three magnificent arches, and above them three ranges of open galleries adorned with sculptures. One of the arches is smaller than the other two because they had to accommodate the bell tower, which already existed. I’m sure there’s a reason why they didn’t just make the church a little wider so that all the arches could be the same. The base of the bell tower is made of a quartz stone called guamo, which is darker than the limestone above. There is one opening on each side of the tower at three floors up, followed by progressively more openings until five per side is reached at the top.
