Description
Hwy 118 east of Haliburton follows the north shore of Loon Lake, beginning at the east edge of Sunrise Bay, where this photo was taken. Originally called Silver Lake in 1838, then Mink lake and Dudmon Lake, its name was officially changed to Loon Lake in 1961. Originally a logging economy, a train carried timber from Loon Lake to Donald as late as the 1920's. The lake became a vacation destination after cottages began to appear in the 1940's, and winter and summer activities abound. During the winter, the lake is in the wind shadow of Lake Huron, and heavy lake-effect snows cover the area. This photo was taken during one such blizzard right after a snow plow had passed, leaving the interesting pattern of melting snow on the pavement from the salt spread by the truck.
