Description
It's a 10 story concrete cube that houses 180,000 square feet of space and 11 exhibition halls. It's the Perot Museum of Nature and Science. The Perot's origins reach back to the 1936 Texas Centennial Exhibition, which created the Dallas Museum of Natural History. In 2006 the museum's chief executive, Nicole Small, oversaw the uniting of that institution and two others at the nearby Fair Park: the Science Place and the Dallas Children's Museum. On December 1, 2012 the unity became reality with the opening of the museum in Victory Park, near Downtown Dallas. The architect is Pritzker Architecture Prize Laureate Thom Mayne and his firm Morphosis Architects. Morphosis is known for developing layered architecture that eschews the normal bounds of traditional form. For example, the Perot Museum of Nature and Science will feature a 54-foot, continuous-flow escalator contained in a 150-foot, glass-enclosed, tube-like structure that dramatically extends outside the building. Unexpected details such as these define Mayne's style.
