Description
On a chilly morning, Canary Springs in the Mammoth Hot Springts area in Yellowstone National Park was enveloped in thick swirling sulfur-smelling mist. Through the mist you occasionally got a glimpse of the yellow colors of the formations which are due to filamentous bacteria that require sulfur to live. The white sections are travertine. While the environment is perfect for these bacteria, it isn’t as friendly to trees. There are thick deposits of white travertine around them, burying them in a calcite tomb.
