Lodgepole Pine Trees Reflections In The Fog
Artist

Description
We were passing by a small pond early one morning in Yellowstone National Park. The water was calm and still and the fog made these lodgepole pines stand out in the eerie stillness. These dead lodgepole pines are called ‘bobby socks trees’ because of their white bottoms! They look like they are wearing the white anklet socks, at one time called “bobby socks.” (Raise your hand if you wore bobby socks). The trees soaked up the mineralized water in Yellowstone’s hydrothermal areas, which killed them. When the water evaporated, the minerals were left behind, turning the lower portion of the trees white.

I love the way you used the term eerie stillness in the description, because that was my first thought upon seeing this image. You captured the essence of the moment perfectly!

Beautiful--I love the reflections and the abstracted composition they bring about.
