This image was taken at Elkmont, a now defunct vacation community within the Great Smoky Mountains National Park on the Tennessee side. In the early 1920's, a large resort hotel and lodge, along with several cabins, were built for "city folk" from nearby Knoxville to have a place to enjoy the benefits of the mountains during vacation season. The Elkmont community thrived for years before the national park was established, but once the park came into being the cottage owners were given leases on the property so that they could maintain the cottages and still use them. Eventually, however, the land was all taken over by the park and the historic structures fell into disrepair due to neglect and the lack of park budget to keep them maintained. Many of the cottages have now been demolished, but a few have been restored and the Elkmont community is now on the National Register of Historic Places. Although the Wonderland hotel is also gone, the lodge remains on the property and serves as a nice reminder to days gone by. While walking through some of the cottages recently, I just liked this little corner window and sink with the beautiful light streaming in. I found myself thinking about families enjoying this area around 90 years ago. The Elkmont community is known by many as the "ghost town" of the Smoky Mountains. This image would make a great addition to a bathroom or kitchen wall!
