Cobwebs clutter the window...their shadows dancing in the waning light...rippling across the floor...atop the pine pews...where fidgety lads labored to be still...stuffed in their Sunday best...shoed feet longing for mud to squish between their toes...swaying legs stilled by a stern glare...the church bell clanging to start the service...now they sit empty...dust motes pile against the straight backs...benches polished by decades of use...where births were christened...marriages were blessed...and widows wept...Fourth of Julys and Christmas holidays passed...the bell rang in each New Years...the church on the bluff stood tall...generations of family worshiped in these halls...friendships forged, young love blossomed, and sins forgiven, a celebration of life on the Superior shores far from home...each soul building the story...weaving the tale...adding to the adventure...centered in the modest church...until the day the steam engines stopped, the skip whistles fell silent, the streets laid deserted...the cliff echoed with the bell's final peal...the town's voice muted...the houses left to the seasons...the forest reclaimed...and silence reigned...the church sat abandoned on the hill...empty...passing the years... filled only with memories...but not forgotten by the families that held it dear...the miners, the clerks, the trammers...the farmers, the teamsters, the masons...for the descendants visit every year...to honor their ancestors...people history has forgotten..to a feast of saffron bread and pasties...a renewal of old family fellowships...a service to shake the rafters...and maybe...just maybe.. another generation of love will root...another chapter to add to the saga...of a little church...on a bluff...in the land North of Nowhere...
