Description
Lioness Settling in a Shady Spot Near the Waterhole, No. 2
We had returned to the Aus waterhole since we had seen two hyenas leaving there the day before and hadn’t had much time to spend there. It is also supposed to be frequented by lions. We drove up and there was nothing there but helmeted guineafowl. Two other trucks that had been there left. Then as if on cue, I saw a lion emerge from the trees opposite and start down the slope towards the waterhole. It looked very hot, exhausted really. It saw our car, and lay down about 20 feet down the slope and probably 50 yards from the waterhole. Then a few minutes later I saw a hyena coming from west, on the same level as the waterhole and completely oblivious to the lion. It also looked hot and had swollen teats. It entered the water and soaked. Surprisingly, the lion just watched it but made no move. The hyena turned and caught sight of the lion. You could practically see the wheels turning inside its head. It very slowly exited the water, occasionally looking back to the lion. It decided to move towards our car, coming closer to get to the trees on the other side. The lion started to rise, but fortunately for the hyena, another car entered the gravel area and the hyena disappeared into the trees. The lion moved towards the waterhole and parking area, stopping underneath a tree. It lay down in a shady spot, but that was also sheltered from sight from any animals entering from the west or south. We couldn’t figure out why it hadn’t made a move on the hyena, except that it had looked so exhausted. We left the lion there, as the time was getting closer where we needed to get back to camp before the gates closed.

Nature, animals, beauty have been a source of nourishment throughout my life. Photography allows me to capture, interpret, and share that world of wonder I see about me, and sometimes use what I capture as an inspiration to create something new, by incorporating other exposures, textures or brushwork.
