Lila May Banks Cockrell is a former mayor of San Antonio, Texas. The Lila Cockrell Theatre, located on the banks of the San Antonio River Walk, is named in her honor.
The 110-by-22-foot mosaic glass mural 'Confluence of Civilizations in the Americas' is visible from The Riverwalk, on the facade of the Lila Cockrell Theater. It was created by Juan O'Gorman as part of the 1968 HemisFair (the World's Fair). More than 1.2 million natural stones and pieces of glass were used to show the past and future development of the Americas. The mural tells the story of the region from the days before the conquest to the present day. It symbolizes the progress made by the confluence of civilizations in the Western Hemisphere. Adam and Eve are in the middle; European civilization is depicted on the right, and indigenous meso-American civilization on the left. The Tower of the Americas (built for the HemisFair in 1968) also symbolizes the confluence of civilizations.
The Lila Cockrell Theater has always been a venue for ballet, concerts and drama, but recent upgrades make the new facility ready for anything, even a Pink Floyd/Michael Jackson Laser Spectacular.
