Description
These layered sedimentary rocks were deposited during the Jurassic period some 200-million years ago when the Red Mountain Open Space in northern Colorado was just floodplain, marsh, and dunes in humid lowland climate supporting lush vegetation and lots of dinosaurs. This layered cake is in the northern part of Colorful Colorado and was formed during a mountain building period as a tectonic plate from the west slid under the continental crust. It has been preserved in part due to a concentrated conservation project aimed at maintaining the vastness of the area.
The Mountains to Plains Project is a collaborative habitat conservation effort consisting of contributions from willing landowners, The Nature Conservancy, Larimer County Open Lands Program, Legacy Land Trust, the City of Fort Collins Natural Areas Program, and Great Outdoors Colorado. The project protects over 55,000 acres of land.
The purpose of the project is to aid conservation and management of grasslands in Colorado, Bird Conservancy of the Rockies has partnered with the City of Fort Collins to inventory and monitor grassland birds on city-owned properties in Larimer and Weld counties. The project began in 2006 and 2007 on Soapstone Prairie Natural Area, expanded significantly in 2008 and 2009 with the incorporation of Meadow Springs Ranch and Round Butte Ranch, and grew again in 2010 with the addition of the Bernard Ranch.
These properties support breeding populations of more than 20 high-priority bird species, primarily grassland species, recognized by Colorado Parks and Wildlife, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Partners in Flight, the U.S. Shorebird Conservation Plan, The Nature Conservancy and other conservation groups
In June 2009, Larimer County’s Red Mountain Open Space and the City of Fort Collins’ Soapstone Prairie Natural Area become open to the public. The two properties are connected and bounded by the southern border of Wyoming which includes 30 miles of interconnected trails. The City of Cheyenne owns 1,800 acres along Wyoming’s southern border with trails that connect to the Red Mountain Open Space and Soapstone Prairie Natural Areas.
Some digital effects were applied to the original image after the photograph was made. No electrons were harmed during the transition. Ordered images will not contain the Fine Art America watermark.
