Now in capturing life, this does not mean that they photograph it: it means that they capture its sense, its emotion, its hope, its beauty. Other types of paintings focus on the opposite: despair, anger, hopelessness, anxiety, and shock value, but this is not what matters at Steve Henderson Collections.
Light of Zion is an example of a painting of the first description, one that invites viewers to look at the world around them in a deeper, more meaningful way. The central figure, a woman beautifully dressed, with heels no less, walks gracefully through the rough and majestic landscape of Zion National Park.
While the heels and the dress seem initially incongruous (shouldn’t she be wearing hiking boots? And is a dress the best clothing in which to hike?), the sheer incongruity of it tantalizes, inviting the viewer to finish the story, follow the woman, join her as she makes her way through a rugged landscape and through a pass in the mountains in the background.
She is walking not so much through Zion as through life – a woman of confidence and ability, sure in her step. Aware of the beauty surrounding her, she is also fully aware of its awesome majesty, its potential danger, its difficulty in crossing. But in a way, she metaphorically floats slightly above the landscape, which is how she can negotiate it in heels, and reminds us that we, too, are not stuck to solidly plodding along, wondering when we will get there already.
Life is a journey, and it is not always an easy one. But as human beings created in the image of God, deeply loved by the One who created us, we are not stuck to solidly plodding along, but are invited to walk with grace, trust, and beauty through the world.
