Description
Levant Pumping Engine House and Skip Shaft head-frame high on the cliffs above the mining tunnels under the sea bed far below.
Levant Mine near St Just on the north Cornwall coast was recently worked from 1820 to 1930 although there are records of mining here from 1670. The shafts and tunnels went out deep under the sea and produced 130,000 tons of copper, 24,000 of tin and 4000 tones of arsenic.
On the 20th October 1919 the 62 year old man engine, a wooden structure that transported the miners between the surface and the tunnels, failed when the supporting rod broke, killing 31 and injuring 19. Even though the mine continued to be worked after the accident it never fully recovered and was closed in 1930.
