Just outside of Death Valley National Park is the ghost town of Rhyolite Nevada, having its own resident ghosts at the Goldwell Open Air Museum. These ghostly figures are part of the “Last Supper”, a grouping of plaster figures presented as an interpretation of DaVinci’s original fresco. They are somewhat surreal, leading one writer to say “’The Last Supper’ beckons visitors … like a demonic vision born of heat stroke and Satanic enchantment.” The surreal nature of the sculpture lies in part because the figures are nothing more than stark white plaster cloaks draped over….nothing. There are no human figures beneath. The human figures departed after the plaster dried during the original creation of the work! What remains looks like a bleached version of Grandpa of the Munsters. Goldwell Open Air Museum was conceived by a group of Belgian artists, led by the late Albert Szukalski. The Last Supper creation was completed in 1985.
