Description
During the retreat from Mons, at Nery the 4 guns of L-Battery, Royal Horse Artillery, came under fire by German Artillery, firing from high ground. Three of the guns of L-Battery were quickly knocked out, leaving just one gun to engage the Germans. The Officer Commanding L-Battery was killed and the 2-IC, Captain Bradbury took charge. and rallied the one remaining gun with the help of Battery Sergent Major Dorrell and Sergeant Nelson and two gunners. They were able to keep the gun firing for several hours until reinforcements arrived and routed the German attackers. For their gallant actions, Capt Dorrell (who died of his wounds), BSM Dorrell and Sgt Nelson were awarded the Victoria Cross (For Valour), the highest British medal. (the narrative around the picture is incorrect in the listing of 4 soldiers having been awarded the Victoria Cross).
