Description
The Turkey River flows over the dam in the background, then near the Clayton County Court House on the right, and under this magnificent stone bridge called the Keystone Arch Bridge in Elkader, Iowa. The Turkey River begins in Cresco, Iowa, on its 153 mile trek to the Mississippi River.
On August 15, 1889, construction was completed on the Keystone Arch Bridge across the Turkey River in Iowa. The previous wood and iron bridge of the 1860s became unsafe, so it was replaced by this relatively maintenance-free stone bridge.
Additional information: The bridge arches were constructed by building a wooden support in the shape of the arch. Carefully shaped stones were laid in place from each side until it was nearly complete. A final row of wedge shaped stones called “keystones” were carefully lowered into place which locked the two sides together. The wood supports were removed and the arch was free standing. Keystone arch construction dates back to the Roman aqueducts.
