Description
With winter approaching, trees are mostly bare, and the riot of autumn color has faded. But the landscape still holds its attractions, sometimes in surprisingly simple things. Walking along a gravel road at the Virginia State Arboretum (Boyce, Virginia, USA) I looked ahead and saw a single tree, standing just over the rise, with its branches bare against the sky; then I noticed the patterns on the roadbed, created by the shadows of the tall grasses; and the feathery cirrus clouds overhead, running at a diagonal across the view. Amazing how a picture of.... well, not much, really.... can get my imagination going. I like the image in color, but I decided it was a prime candidate for a grayscale version; after the removal of color, a few tweaks to intensify the contrast and deepen the shadows was all I needed to achieve the mood I had in mind.
