The plan was to visit Point Arena Lighthouse, only 46 miles away from where we stayed in Fort Bragg, California. But we got waylaid only a few miles into the drive as we got a good view of the coastline from a bridge high over the rocky shores. Just after that, we saw the sign for Jug Handle State Natural Reserve and an empty parking lot. What more did we need to entice us to stop!? Walk down to the beach or stick to the cliffs above, it’s a beautiful view either way! Jug Handle State Natural Reserve is on the rugged Mendocino Coast, with spectacular ocean views, peaceful forests, and a hike through half a million years of ecological history. The reserve’s 2.5-mile Ecological Staircase Trail explores three wave-cut terraces formed by the continental glaciers, rising seas, and tectonic plates that built the Coast Range. Few places on earth display a more complete record of how geology, soils, and plants change over time. The end of the story: We eventually made it to Point Arena Lighthouse but the 46 mile drive took 3+ hours and might have taken longer if I didn’t insist that I wanted to see the lighthouse before we had to drive back to Fort Bragg!
