Joy Of The Season
Artist
Lianne Schneider
Medium
Digital Art - Digital Painting/photographic Art
Description
Joy of the Season is a hand-painted digital recreation of an 1880s chromolithograph entitled "Christmas Eve" by J. Hoover & Sons of Philadelphia. (Hoover & Sons also published a version of the W.C Bauer "Christmas Eve" that I painted last year). Contact me before purchasing as a card and I can customize front text for you. The process of using a public domain image as a basis for an ORIGINAL art work is discussed below in the section About the Artist.
According to The Philadelphia Print Shop Ltd, in their discussion of "Chromolithography: The Art of Color Publishers" (http://www.philaprintshop.com/chrompub.html#Hoover), J. Hoover & Sons Publishers were one of the most successful publishers of the printing art of chromolithography which I discuss briefly below.
From the article above: "J. Hoover & Sons issued popular prints for the masses in the last decade of the 19th century and the first decade of the 20th century" This was a similar business to the perhaps better known Currier & Ives, though Hoover & Sons issued chromolithographs while Currier & Ives printed primarily hand colored lithographs, a different process. Joseph Hoover was one of the few native-born Americans who achieved success with chromolithography. "Initially he (Hoover) mostly worked for other publishers, including Duval & Hunter, and he worked with noted Philadelphia artist James F. Queen. He also issued a few hand-colored, popular prints of considerable charm. During the Centennial, Hoover won a medal for excellence for his chromolithographs after Queens' renderings.
In the 1880s, Hoover began to print chromolithographs, installing a complete printing plant by 1885. By the end of the century, his firm was one of the largest print publishers in the county, with an average annual production of between 600,000 to 700,000 pictures. Using chromolithography, Hoover was able to produce attractive, colorful prints that were still affordable for anyone to use as decoration for home and office. The audience for Hoover's prints was quite wide, extending throughout the United States, Canada, Mexico, England and Germany. The subjects issued by the firm are extensive, including genre scenes, still life images, views of American locations, and generic landscapes, including a series of charming winter scenes." (I am attributing this excerpt to the Philadelphia Print Shop Ltd. but I have seen the same exact material worded identically on several other sites without attribution. All I can do is the best I can do to give credit).

ABOUT THE ARTIST:
This painting, as with most of my digital paintings, is an ORIGINAL work of art created entirely on a Wacom tablet using a number of different painting programs and various genres of painting styles overlaid upon each other, much the same as the old printing process of chromolithography. In this case, the reference image is a public domain photograph from the Library of Congress collection.
Many of my paintings, including this one, follow a process similar to early chromolithography in that each section of the painting is often a different layer. Wikipedia describes the process of chromolithography as multi-layered, sometimes requiring 25 to 50 layers to achieve the colors and fine details. Each color requires a different printing to achieve the painted look so one layer might print only an item of clothing in a painting.
The difference between that process and my own is that in my case I may paint the entire layer originally in a very abstract underpainting then repaint the next layer in a slightly less abstract style, then another layer in a realistic oils or impasto, etc. Another layer may be to deepen the color of only certain areas requiring the "erasing" of all but one small part of the image. Almost all of my paintings require anywhere from 10-30 layers to complete, some as many as 50.
Thank you for your interest in my artwork. I am a western New York based artist with a passion for the sea and a deep love for the natural world around me. The Fine Art America Watermark will NOT appear on the finished product.
Because the final creations are entirely digital in nature they are considered to be original art work, not reproductions. According to the International Association of Fine Art Digital Print Makers (IAFADP), "An original digital print is not based upon using original artwork outside of the computer. The artist may use elements as source materials, such as photographs, drawings or other appropriated images (those in the public domain), but THE FINAL FORM OF THE WORK EXISTS ONLY IN THE COMPUTER AND AS THE FINAL PRINT OR AS AN EDITION OF PRINTS."
Please contact the artist, Lianne Schneider, directly if you purchase this image as a giclee print on canvas, framed or unframed. A signed and numbered Certificate of Authenticity is available for each canvas indicating title of the work, my name, date of creation, a thumbnail of the painting, the origin of original work if the painting is a derivative, the number of your print in the limited printing and a guarantee that the work will no longer be available to the public in a canvas format once a total of 25 canvas prints are sold from all potential vendors.
