Description
A stately Joshua Tree (Yucca brevifolia) keeps watch like a sentinel in the Mojave Desert of southern California.
This intriguing plant got its name from the branches resembling arms raised skyward in prayer like the Biblical figure Joshua.
It is native to the southwestern United States in California, Arizona, Utah and Nevada, and confined mostly to the Mohave Desert region.
Because the Joshua tree's trunk is composed of thousands of fibers, it lacks tree rings, making it difficult to determine its age. Its deep and extensive root system can radiate out as much as 36 feet (11 meters) away from the plant, which can grow as tall as 49 feet (15 meters)
According to Wikipedia, the Joshua Tree is a plant species belonging to the genus "Yucca". It is a member of a family of plants with the botanical name "Monocotyledones" which means they begin with one cotyledon or embryonic leaf as they sprout from seed.
The way the Joshua tree propagates itself by seed is truly a remarkable example of symbiosis, the mutually beneficial relationship of two dissimilar living things dependent on each other for survival.
Joshua trees depend solely on the female yucca moth (Tegeticula species) for pollination to produce its seeds. The moth pollinates the trees by means of very specialized "tentacles" around its mouth, and in turn, the Joshua tree's seeds provide the moth's larvae with sustenance. Without the moth, the Joshua tree could not produce seeds to start new populations, and without the Joshua tree, the moth could not survive. A remarkable example of Intelligent Design in nature.
Although the desert can have harsh conditions of blazing heat during summer days and freezing cold on winter nights, Joshua Trees may live hundreds of years in this challenging environment, with the oldest ones surviving up to an estimated 300 years.
I am reminded of Abba Father's reassurance: "Have I not commanded you? Chazak! [Hebrew translation: Be strong!] Do not be terrified or dismayed, for ADONAI your God is with you wherever you go." (Joshua 1:9, TLV)
