Description
One of those obscure, somewhat strange roadside attractions found throughout the country. This is actually alongside a bayou in Chauvin (pronounced show-van) Louisiana. A sculpture garden built between the years 1990 to 2000. Consists of over 100 stone sculptures and a 45 ft. tall lighthouse. Mostly biblical in nature but interspersed with angels are jazz musicians, Iwo Jima flag raising, slavery, cowboys and Indians , birds and other subjects. All are brightly colored and even gaudy. Some are painted in black face and others are painted half black and half white Mr Hill even sculpted his likeness into scenes and can be seen carrying Christ's cross. Mr. Hill ran afoul of the parish (county, municipality) he lived in for not maintaining the grounds allowing weeds to take over. He was subsequently evicted and left on foot never to be seen again but not before knocking the head of Jesus off of a statue.
You can simply drive up and park outside the entrance or arrange for an informational tour.Right next door is neighbor Julius Neil considered to be the local historian and one time confidante of Mr. Hill.
