Description
I have painted several seascapes in part because I am intrigued by waves. The saltiness of the air, the sounds of waves breaking on the shore, and the far distant horizon that goes out for miles were constant reminders to me of how vast the sea and the world is and how small and minor I am – we all are. This is a constant theme throughout many of my paintings. I find myself deep in thought as I sit in a forest – me, small and minor, the forest huge and all encompassing. But as I look out on the sea and its vast flatness or its rolling waves, my reflections become grander as I watch the sea disappear at the edge of the horizon. As I think of the bravery of and trust in previous generations of sailors and travelers - men and women - put in their navigation, their ships, their crew, and their gods, I cannot but marvel at the faith truly needed to cross the sea. Standing on the shores of Mumbai, I often imagined travelers’ life. With this painting, I am trying to depict the ugly side of nature they have to face. But I am sure they will be singing the quote above; they had to believe it in their hearts, accept it as their truth, and know it in their faiths.
