Description

The wonder of the Grand Canyon never fades. Each visit brings new inspiration and sights. This particular portrait view of the canyon was captured near Desert View looking west into the canyon's abyss. I was struck with the layered landscapes flow. Deep below, out of the frame, flowed the Colorado River., the canyon's carving force.

This image is designed to evoke the gritty feel of early landscape photography at the canyon. I framed the composition with tripod perched safely at the canyon's edge. The original image was shot 30 minutes after sunset with the last vestiges of light fleeing the canyon. A thirty second exposure allowed enough light to produce the desired muted, gritty and grainy look in black and white.

I find myself lost in thought, inspired for the next adventure. I imagine generations of photographers, professional and holiday amateurs, standing on the spot recording their own canyon vision. I recall each visit to the canyon: hikes along the rim and adventures to the canyon floor. I hope you find similar inspiration and recall your own special memories.

The Grand Canyon is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
