Description

"I survived the road to Hana" is a common tourist saying on the island of Maui, Hawaii. Tourists sprout t-shirts and regale others for hours, telling of the harrowing three hour drive to the small community of Hana and beyond. The drive that looks like an short fifty mile jaunt is in reality a day trip filled with sheer ocean drop-offs, too many to count one way stretches of highway- many across bridges, potholes, crazy drivers and large busses, blind corners and eye-popping beauty everywhere. Locals are well aware of the hazards of the road and those who must travel to other parts of the island have learned to carry a sleeping bag in their vehicle should inclement weather washout and close a section of the highway and they are unable to return home at the end of the day.
Myself, I have had a bit of fun as well with torrential rains closing part of the highway, driving through deep water spilling over a bridge, and having large palm trees crashing down not more than 50 feet in front of my rental vehicle, blocking the road until a local hacked it up with a machete. It's always an adventure, and one which I return to like a moth to a flame time and time again.

As seen from the air, this is a section of the narrow infamous highway. The twisty turns and precipitious drive along the sheer Pacific Ocean cliffs, and changing jungle and farmland terrain are detailed. Far below the cliffs, the turquoise ocean water turns white as it smashes onto the rocky shoreline.
