I Stand At The Door And Knock
Artist
Steve Henderson
Medium
Digital Art - Word Art Painting
Description
The knock is soft, but loud enough to be noticed, prompting us to stop and listen.
When you think about it, knocks on the door come in all forms and volumes, with a personality all their own. Some are peremptory and sharp, startling us from what we were doing. Others are soft, almost timid, to the point that we wonder if we heard them at all.
Others are confident and firm, the knock of a person who knows us well and is trying to gain access to us.
This is the knock in the artwork, I Stand at the Door and Knock, a quote from Revelation 3:20, attributed to Christ. It’s an interesting idea, that of the Messiah, standing outside, knocking for our attention in the same way a friend would come to the back door at the kitchen (the door by which friends enter).
This is not a threatening knock, an impatient knock, an irritated knock – which are attributes, unfortunately, that many have come to associate with Christ in His relationship to us. This is the knock of a friend, one who knows we are in there, and is so familiar with our habits that He also knows we generally take a cup of tea at this time.
So what better time to knock and gain entrance than now, joining us for that cup of tea, to converse and be together, to involve Himself in our lives to the point of being part of the most “minor,” “trivial” aspects of it? Isn’t this what friends and family do? Isn’t this the basis for good, healthy relationships?
It’s intriguing how often religious elements talk about a “personal relationship with Jesus Christ,” but avoid all aspects of real, personal relationships. I Stand at the Door and Knock invites us to stop when we hear that knock, put down the cup of tea, open the door, and invite the visitor in for a cup.

Very well done, sir! As a person who has studied filmmaking for years I really appreciate this scene. I love the fact that you are left imaging Jesus at the door rather than see Him, which is what is typically shown. We are put in her space and in her world in a moment in time. And the character is portrayed in a way that makes you question if she will respond positively to the knock! It is a pause in time that each of us is brought to daily while going about our business. If we are listening with our spiritual ears to His prompting how will we act?! Excellent, ((applause))!
Steve Henderson replied:
Thank you, Adam. I appreciate your insight and sensitivity to the moment presented in this work. That concept of presenting just enough but not too much in a creative piece is a powerful one.
