Description
Interior design of the Indian Watchtower at the Grand Canyon includes several murals depicting various aspects of Hopi mythology and religious ceremonies. This is a mural of the Hopi Snake Legend that Hopi artist Fred Kabotie recreated in 1932. The mural describes the Hopi cultural connection to the Grand Canyon. This painting tells the story of a Hopi man who floated down the Colorado River through the canyon in a hollow log.

Gorgeous and strong! I never got to actually witness the Hopi Snake Ceremony, but one of my family's friends who was a traditional ceremonial leader told us about it. Famously, the participants dance with rattlesnakes and bull snakes in their mouths. The Hopis know how to treat the snakes with kindness and gentleness. The snakes are sacred, and messangers to the gods. What a beautiful and fascinating image! fav
