Description
There’s just no place like the country – whether that country is in the midst of a forest, on the coast by the sea, or, as in the case of the artwork, Homeland 1, within the fields and meadows of land that is farmed or ranched.
Homeland 1 invites the viewer to step into the country landscape, one of late summer or early fall when the grass has turned golden from the long, hot, summer days. Nestled in the back against the hills, a farmhouse peeks out at the viewer through the impressionistic brushwork. There is silence here, peace and quiet, the buzz of insects on a lazy summer afternoon and the occasional call of a songbird, hidden within the branches of the trees.
The sky is that deep, gray blue of the season – clear and without clouds – portending no rain or storms until autumn arrives fully with its colorful leaves and constantly changing weather. This is a day, one feels, a summer day of moving slowly, perhaps settling in the grass with a blanket on the ground and a book in hand, to do nothing more than listen to the silence and allow one’s thoughts the wander.
Whatever traffic there is, is minimal – a car or two passing as a resident drives up to their homestead in the hills above. There are no sirens, no automobile horns honking, no loud shouts from crowds of people milling through. There is simply the silence of summer in the country, a silence so profound that one listens for the breeze through the branches.
The scene for Homeland 1 is one I see everyday, as it is visible from the land upon which I live and walk. As the seasons change, so changes the landscape, but always it retains its sense of peace and tranquility. It is a good place to call one’s homeland.
