Description
On a rainy late autumn day, the mood at the midpoint of historic Route 66 in Adrian, Texas was a bit ghost-like…like much of the historic route these days. I pondered the sign and the 2278 miles of the route and wondered about the people who made the journey along the ‘mother road’. I wondered how fast cars could go ‘back in the day’, especially along parts of the road that were ‘unimproved’. How long would it have taken people to make that journey if they went all the way from Chicago to LA? What happened if the car broke down? How did they feel when they reached Adrian knowing (without benefit of the sign) that they were only half way there. The ‘Grapes of Wrath’ echoed in my head.
