On a sunny winter day, the tower of the New Cathedral (Catedral Nueva) stands high above the city of Salamanca Spain as viewed from across the Tormes River. The bridge seen on the left is the historic Roman Bridge (Puente romano de Salamanca). As with many historic structures, there have been many restorations but the earliest construction of a bridge at this location dates in the very late BCE or the early CE. Both the bridge and the cathedral are important symbols of the city. The bridge was declared Artistic Historic Monument on June 3, 1931, and Bien de Interés Cultural since 1998. Building of the cathedral began in 1513 and it was consecrated in 1733. It was declared a national monument by royal decree in 1887.
