Along the hike to Cassidy Arch in Capitol Reef National Park, you come across an overlook where you can see Hickman Arch. From this viewpoint, the arch (approximately in the center) does not stand out against the sky but has the rock cliffs in the background. At first glance, I didn’t even see it. After having hiked to/under Hickman Arch, I was expecting the arch to be a big part of the scenery! However, it looks small against the grandeur of the entire scene! The rock formations at Capitol Reef are endlessly fascinating and photogenic. The rock formations are due to a geologic formation called the Waterpocket Fold that was formed 65 million years ago, probably at the same time the colliding of continental plates created the Rocky Mountains. The contrasting layers of stone and earth, the sandstone cliffs, and the canyons, domes and bridges in the park are a photographic paradise! Capitol Reef National Park lies in Utah’s south-central desert. The area was designated as a national monument in 1937 but not actually opened to the public until 1950. It was reclassified as a national park in 1971.
