Description
Hermitage Castle, a massive H-shaped fortress of enormous strength, one of the oldest surviving castles in Scotland. It was built in 1244 by Nicholas de Soulis. The castle
was known as the guardhouse of the bloodiest valley in Britain, and the "Strength of Liddesdale" a valley in southern scotland. The castle is famously known for Mary, Queen of Scots, making a marathon journey on horseback to visit the wounded James Hepburn, 4th Earl of Bothwell, keeper and lord of The Hermitage Castle at the time. He eventually married Mary Queen of Scots.Hermitage Castle, Scotland
