Description
"Harvesting Wheat in the San Luis Valley, Colorado" by Catherine Sherman.
My friend and I stopped to watch farmers harvest wheat in the San Luis Valley of southern Colorado in late September. It was mesmerizing. We would have stayed longer, except for the flying chaff.
The San Luis Valley is a broad, mostly flat, valley at the headwaters of the Rio Grande in south central Colorado and far north central New Mexico. Irrigated agriculture is possible in the area due to groundwater and streams fed by the average 100 inches of snow the surrounding mountain ranges receive. The southern portion is drained by the Rio Grande.
Much of the land in the San Luis Valley is used for grazing, but wheat is among the four principal crops grown in the area. The other three are potatoes, head lettuce and barley.
