Description
St. Peter’s Roman Catholic Church sits high on a cliff overlooking the confluence of the Potomac and Shenandoah Rivers in Harpers Ferry, West Virginia. In 1859, the historic town was the site of abolitionist John Brown’s raid on the United States Armory and Arsenal, a precursor to the American Civil War two years later. St. Peter’s was the only church in the town not to be destroyed during the Civil War. First built in 1833, the Neo-Gothic styled church we see today is the result of extensive alterations to the original building in 1896. Even the road the church is on is famous, for it is part of the Appalachian Trail, which at 2,190 miles is the longest hiking-only footpath in the world. (On my next trip to Harpers Ferry, I hope to get a photograph like this that has a hiker on the Appalachian Trail.)
